“WHAT DO YOU think you’re doing with Kristin?” Kenneth’s voice thundered in the corridor of the fourth floor.

It was the end of my first week as Roy’s apprentice, but every time I heard Kenneth’s voice, I snapped to attention and breathed hard. I’d been heading to Roy’s room, but upon hearing Kenneth’s voice, I paused on the landing and hid behind a corner.

I took a peek. Roy was standing in front of Kenneth, feet set in a wide stance. The unforgiving cast of his shoulders didn’t bode well for Kenneth.

“Kristin is my apprentice,” Roy said. “My method of training isn’t your concern.”

“She’s a failed beast. She should be shipped to the Colonies.”

“None of your business.” The words came out like bullets from Roy’s mouth.

“What are you doing?” Peggy whispered next to me, causing me to almost shout.

“Eavesdropping.” I tilted my head towards the two men glowering at each other.

“Exciting.” She grinned.

“I’ll file a complaint to the commander,” Kenneth said, stepping back from the angry condottiero.

Roy shrugged. “You can file your arse for all I care. The commander approves what I do.”

“What’s this?” Michael whispered. “A secret meeting? Are we playing a game?” He squeezed himself between Peggy and me.

I chuckled. “We’re spying. Peggy thinks it’s exciting.”

She paled, then flushed crimson and a strangled moan came out of her.

A frown drew Michael’s brows together. “Are you all right?” he asked, poking her with an elbow.

“I’ll write to Minister Eggardon himself.” Kenneth bared his teeth. “Let’s see what he thinks.”

A little worm of fear worked its way through me. “Can Kenneth do that? Send me away?”

“I doubt his threats are anything more than smoke,” Michael said. “If the commander teams up with Roy, as I’m sure he will, no one will touch you. And we’ll do what we can to keep you here, won’t we, Peggy?” He put an arm around her shoulders, but the horrified look on her face caused him to withdraw it. “I . . . I’d better go.” He clapped my shoulder. “Don’t worry, Kristin. Roy always wins. One way or another,” he added with a bitter note.

What did he mean by that? As he hurried towards the stairs, Kenneth and Roy moved towards the other side of the corridor, their voice fading. Peggy let out a long breath.

I faced her. “Why are you so nervous when Michael is around?”

“He’s so . . . intense. I’m worried he might think I’m an idiot.” She tugged at a long strand of hair.

“I don’t believe that, but I believe he thinks you don’t like him at all.”

“That’s not true.” Her cheeks flamed again.

“Then relax when he’s close. You’re funny, clever, and so witty. He’ll like you. I promise.”

“I don’t know. I’ve never been popular. The first year here, no one wanted to sit next to me in the canteen or spar with me. I started my training at the same time that Clare did. Yet she’s a high-ranking officer, while my uniform is still yellow.” She let out a hollow chuckle.
